Are XDR systems taking the place of SIEM?
XDR (Extended Detection and Response) and SIEM (Security Information and Event Management) systems have some overlapping capabilities, yet they are not identical and are not always meant to replace one another.
As a more recent technology, XDR systems are intended to give organizations a broader view of their security posture by collecting and analyzing data from various sources, including endpoints, networks, and cloud environments. XDR systems focus on automating incident response and providing real-time threat detection and response capabilities.
By contrast, SIEM systems collect and analyze log data from many sources, including firewalls, intrusion detection systems, and endpoint devices, giving a comprehensive view of an organization's security posture and identifying potential threats.
Even as XDR systems are being adopted to improve an organization's security posture, SIEM systems continue to deliver distinct value through visibility, correlation, and threat hunting. Many organizations that have implemented XDR systems still run SIEM systems alongside them for greater visibility and forensic capabilities.
To conclude, XDR and SIEM systems serve different purposes, yet they can work well together. XDR systems deliver real-time threat detection and response, whereas SIEM systems deliver deeper visibility, correlation, and forensic capabilities. By using XDR and SIEM systems in combination, organizations can strengthen their overall security posture and defend against cyber-threats.
